Abstract

|
To obtain information on separation of nonviable seeds from seed lots by the nondestructive methods using sinapine leakage, three Chinese cabbage and radish varieties were artificially aged to get different seed qualities. Dead seeds of all Chinese cabbage and radish varieties leaked significant amounts of sinapine rapidly from 4-8 to 12 hours of soaking period, while high quality seeds leaked negligible amount of sinapine. Among the non-fluorescent cellulose coated seeds under UV light, 97-98% of Chinese cabbage and 84-87% of radish seeds grew to normal seedlings and all fluorescent seeds of Chinese cabbage varieties were dead, while 4-7% of all fluorescent seeds of radish varieties grew to normal seedlings. Non-fluorescent cellulose-coated seeds of Chinese cabbage varieties stored in 45-90% RH at 16¡É for three months were not deteriorated. Seeds of radish varieties stored in 45% RH at 16¡É for three months were not deteriorated, but percentage of normal seedlings decreased as RH and duration of storage increased at 16¡É.
